Mosquito Traps Review:

An enormous amount of consumer interest has been generated by the marketing of new devices designed to attract, then either trap or kill, mosquitoes. The general idea is to reduce the number of questing mosquitoes that would otherwise be afflicting the homeowner. Many products even claim to significantly reduce or even collapse local mosquito populations.

These mosquito traps will trap and kill measurable numbers of mosquitoes. Whether this will produce a noticeable reduction in the mosquito population in each case will depend upon a number of factors, e.g. individual tolerance level, absolute mosquito population size, proximity, size and type of breeding habitat producing re-infestation, wind velocity and direction, and species of mosquito present, and others. Depending upon the mosquito trap placement, wind direction, and inherent trapping efficiency, traps may actually draw more mosquitoes into an area than they can possibly catch. Thus, the homeowner must still use repellents and practice source reduction methods as adjuncts to realize any measure of relief.

Please be cautioned against putting too much faith in mosquito traps as your sole means of control.Their potential is great, but should not be overestimated.

Effective mosquito management requires integrating a variety of available control strategies i.e. surveillance, source reduction, biological control methods, mosquito traps, environmentally friendly larvicides, and, when necessary, application of public health adulticides, into a comprehensive program that exploits known mosquito vulnerabilities. They are the result of almost one hundred years of experience in making mosquito control in the United States.

Caution:

Experts are skeptical of manufacturers who claim that their mosquito traps can protect an acre or more of land. One trap may not do the trick for a large area that is heavily infested. Daniel Kline,a USDA researcher, one of the most respected authorities on mosquito control, has used four mosquito traps for his .75-acre yard. "Any claim about coverage isn't scientifically based," adds Kline. "There are so many factors involved."

Daniel Kline who lives adjacent to Florida wetlands, said he has kept these four Mosquito Magnet Liberty models in his backyard with good results."The downside is that propane can clog the tiny orifice of the trap,"Kline explains, and it can cease functioning.

Placement of mosquito traps is important. Try to place traps that catch all angles of the wind. The prevailing breeze should carry the gas plume across the yard, since mosquitoes follow CO2.

Read and follow the owner's manual to prevent maintenance problems later on.

·        Mosquito traps must run continuously during warm weather. And round-the-clock operation is costly, since the propane must be replaced every three weeks and most models need to be plugged in.

·         Don't rely exclusively on traps for mosquito control. Apply repellent, eliminate standing water in the yard, and wear protective clothing.

·         Mosquito traps usually aren't for indoor use. Mosquito traps use electricity, propane or chemicals. Only use them outdoors and out of reach of children.

Down below there is a short list of the "best mosquito traps" you can buy. There is no mosquito trap that will repel or ward off all mosquitoes, but some are better than others at creating a nice barrier between you and the hordes of mosquitoes that come out each night.

 # 1   Blue Rhino SkeeterVac SV3100 Mosquito Eliminator, Up to 1 Acre

This device uses CO2 to attract and kill mosquitoes. The main advantage, though, is that the SkeeterVac is cordless, powered by a propane tank and a single AA battery. The trap is rated to cover up to one acre. Reviewers posting on Amazon.com give the SkeeterVac very good reviews, citing an excellent customer service.

# 2    Mega-Catch Premier Mosquito Trap (MCP800)

Although reviews agree that the Mosquito Magnet mosquito trap is better overall than the Mega-Catch trap, the Mega-Catch Premier doesn't require a propane tank or produce CO2. Instead, it uses the chemical attractant%u2026 octenol and a UV light attractant. Reviews say this technique is almost as effective as the Mosquito Magnet traps, but you don't have to bother with a propane tank. The Mega-Catch is rated for about one acre. The Mega-Catch mosquito traps don't have a Lurex option, so the SkeeterVac is the better choice if you live in the South, where Asian tiger mosquitoes are prevalent.

# 3    Mosquito Magnet Liberty Mosquito Trap MM3000

It gets some great reviews on some sites and then mixed feedback on others. It has a coverage of about 1 acre in yards and runs on propane. Some reviewers mention they did not see any immediate results, but the product clearly states it can take up to 7-10 days for any noticeable results. Since mosquito populations number in the 1000's, it may take up to 4 or 6 weeks to greatly reduce the mosquito activity in your area, but compared to the competition this mosquito trap will give you better long term mosquito control. Another complaint is that the system can be difficult to setup, but again the results will follow if it's done properly.
